Today was my grandpa's birthday. Most of my family lives in Toronto but a lot of people were out of town for the long weekend. So to celebrate, the few of us left went over to my uncle's place for lunch.
We had steak and salad, with a side of awkward family chatter. The cute kind of awkward. We even took some family photos after. Kinda funny with most of the family missing.
But the whole thing made me see how nice it will be to live in Toronto again. I haven't been near family for years. It's all still very familiar and comforting. One-sided chats with my brother. Some tech support for my grandpa. My grandma constantly telling us to eat more.
We're all getting a little older but, at heart, we're all just the same as we've always been. I'm looking forward to more family gatherings. My great aunt hosts a barbecue during the summer that I've missed for several years. I haven't see that side of the extended family for a long time.
It'll be nice not constantly having to catch up with everyone all the time. It feels good to know what loved ones are up to. Don't take your loved ones for granted, kids.
