Back in school when I had to write long essays, I had a strategy. Write X number of words (usually around 500), and I get a reward.
Write 500 words and I can watch an episode of TV.
Write 500 words and I can play games for half an hour.
Write 500 words and I can go have a snack break.
I always found writing much easier when there was something to look forward to. Breaking down a 5,000-word essay was much more manageable when broken down into 500-word chunks. Especially when I was writing about a topic that wasn't super interesting to me. Like history.
My positive reinforcement is still pretty much the same years after school. I still watch a lot of TV (thanks Netflix), I still play games, I still love snacking. Now that we're traveling too, I'm motivated to get work done so I can go exploring. Sometimes all you need for productivity is a new backdrop.
As I'm writing right now, I'm sitting at our hotel in Sitges. In the little lounge area next to the pool. I'm ready to go out and have some tasty tapas and walk along the beach.
How do you reward yourself for a good day's work?
