Using 200WAD to Procrastinate

Right now I just don't want to mentally commit to working. As a way out I'm turning to 200 WAD. I still haven't figured out the best time to write, nor have I ever known what I'm going to write about until I actually start writing. I would like to structure my posts better and learn to be a better writer. However, a lot of the time I feel rushed just to get the post out and maintain my streak.

It would be nice to plan ahead and flesh out topics in advance so that I could write more meaningful posts. But I don't because work generally takes up the bulk of my day and the bulk of my mental energy. I don't like the feeling of just "winging it", but at the same time I also find some satisfaction in pulling text out of thin air to create a  post. Same goes for my work. I could benefit from planning ahead more, but oftentimes I just need to get started and figure things out as I go.

Either way, I still haven't addressed the issue of procrastination and using 200 WAD as an escape. It's like this new "habit" is interesting and thought-provoking and enjoyable but I'm still not willing to commit to it wholeheartedly. I'm just flopping about, writing stuff that is usually quite worthless.

I've been wrestling with this whole new  "writing habit" stuff a lot this week. I still don't understand what I want from it and if I even want it. But hey, I've been turning up every day for the past 60+ days, so it must mean something, right?

    @jacklyons so many great points here already, so I won't try to sound smarter than them. ;) I'll contribute something new instead: writing for emergence.

    Perhaps you don't work that way - to have an objective upfront, then write to fulfil that objective. For some (certainly often enough for me), writing is to draw out something. What exactly, I don't know. But the act of writing draws it out. It's emergent. And I like what comes out, often enough. Perhaps that's why you're still here after 60 days, despite not knowing why? Just my 2 cents, ymmv

      @jasonleow That really makes a lot of sense and you might be right. It may well be the process of extracting info out of my head that I just learned, or recalling situations in life. I suppose if I think of it as a process of emergence then I can relax and enjoy the randomness, and ability to not "plan" ahead. Thanks for the 2 cents!

    @jacklyons I think what you do is fine, I saw some writer repeat a few days on the same post to make it perfect, it doesn't have to be perfect on the first time, on the other site, if you keep wanting to wait until the post in the proper structure, maybe the post won't be able to publish at all. In a way the streak keeps you moving in a smaller step. ship fast and iterate!

    @jacklyons A man who knows 'why' can bear almost any 'how'. You should start figuring out why you're here, but even if you can't, I wouldn't knock turning up (showing up) for 60+ days as a casual whim. You're here for a reason, make your writing about that reason, then it's going to be a lot easier (and more fun) to write what you write.

    @jacklyons - in addition to Mike's comment, if you show up and just pull words out of your ass to get the streak -- you might be building a junk-food type habit without knowing it. Be careful. Our brains follow our behaviors. But, the title got me here, because I was distracting myself as well. So, we share that at least.

      @jacklyons - sometimes, we don't know why, but we show up -- only to find out later. Sometimes, we disappear, and then later, look back and think -- if I had just kept going.

      Writing is such a cool tool to have in your pocket. Streaks -- while I mostly suck at long streaks, they give me something to play with.

      Here are a few things I've gotten from being here:
      1. Meeting random people I'd call friends -- just from shared words alone.
      2. Place to practice - train - get clarity and get better.
      3. Self expression.

      If the streak is bogging you down, take a break. I can tell you, the writing the day after a broken streak is sweeter than the day you don't feel like writing.

      Maybe that's something all the #teamstreakers might consider -- burnout.

      @brianball So wise! Haha I love this, and it really helps ... It's like I know this is worth doing, I may not know why just now, but the fact that I'm going through the motions counts for something, and maybe that something is deeper than I can actually explain right now, but will make sense later.

      @jacklyons - use this as a place to experiment. Don't think you're publishing for us -- we don't care too much. It's fun to see play and experimentation and failure. We're all doing it. If you want, export your posts later and edit them into a book -- but this isn't a place where I've seen anybody do anything but be encouraging.

    @jacklyons Habits can be positive or negative. Think dope versus exercise (or writing). Positive habits are formed intentionally. If you forget your intention for 200WAD you're likely to give up the habit (and maybe replace it with a negative habit). Time to recall your original intention.

      @mikebyrnes Thanks for the advice! I like the idea of "intention" you put forward and that's definitely something I need to figure out. I've never thought of the concept of a "junk habit". Lots to think about, thank you.
